Upstream and midstream action for healthier, fairer communities.

AFF Missions SCIO is a charity working to prevent harm before it takes hold — improving social conditions, strengthening access and system integrity, and supporting wellbeing, connection, and dignity in everyday life.

WHAT WE DO

AFF Missions SCIO — addressing foundations of fairness — works upstream and midstream to prevent harm before it escalates. We address the conditions that shape wellbeing and the systems people must navigate, ensuring prevention is embedded early, equitably, and sustainably.

Upstream Action

Addressing the foundations of fairness

We work upstream to reduce the social, economic, and cultural conditions that drive stress, stigma, exclusion, and preventable harm.

This includes reshaping narratives, tackling structural pressures, and supporting environments that enable dignity, wellbeing, and fairness.

Midstream Action

Improving systems and everyday experiences

We work midstream to improve how systems operate and are experienced — focusing on access, interaction, and the points where harm is often felt first.

Our work supports systems to be more humane, navigable, and responsive, reducing escalation into crisis.

Linked initiatives:
AoIn • AIHS

Community

Our prevention work is delivered and experienced within community settings, where trust, participation, and wellbeing are strengthened as outcomes of upstream and midstream action.

WHY PREVENTION MATTERS

Across society, people experience stress, exclusion, and harm not because of personal failure, but because of structural pressures, unequal systems, and environments that quietly erode wellbeing over time.

When support only arrives at crisis point, harm is already embedded — for individuals, communities, and public services.

AFF Missions SCIO—addressing foundations of fairness—exists to act earlier and more effectively:

  • Upstream, by addressing the conditions and narratives that shape wellbeing

  • Midstream, by improving how systems operate in practice

  • At community level, by strengthening everyday connection, trust, and resilience

Prevention is not about resilience rhetoric or individual coping.
It is about reducing avoidable harm at source.

INITIATIVES

All AFF Missions initiatives are designed as preventative interventions, each operating across defined points of the prevention pathway.

THiMO

Reducing harm from digital pressure and social comparison

THiMO addresses the cultural and digital environments that drive anxiety, overload, and disconnection. It challenges the normalisation of constant comparison, performance pressure, and fear of missing out, supporting healthier norms around presence, pace, and wellbeing.

Prevention focus: wellbeing · presence · social balance

BuSE

Reducing stigma and harm linked to economic insecurity

BuSE tackles the shame, stress, and exclusion produced by structurally unequal economic systems. It reframes financial hardship as a systems issue, not a personal failing, and supports stigma-free approaches to financial resilience and access.

Prevention focus: fairness · access · stigma reduction

Upstream: Changing the Conditions That Create Harm

AoIn

Improving agency and inclusion across everyday systems

AoIn focuses on the points where people encounter friction, exclusion or delay in routine systems, services, support pathways, and public-facing institutions. It strengthens agency, resilience, and meaningful participation helping communities build confidence, belonging, collective responsibility and dignity without escalating to crisis or enforcement thresholds.

Prevention focus: agency · inclusion · resilient connections

AIHS

Access and integrity in higher-risk system contexts

AIHS is a standalone initiative focused on reducing the risk of victimisation by strengthening system integrity, accountability, and ethical design in higher-risk contexts. It places responsibility on institutions rather than individuals, ensuring systems act with care and fairness.

Prevention focus: integrity · accountability · safe system design

Midstream: Improving How Systems Are Accessed and Experienced

Prevention Ecosystem Diagram

Midstream initiatives include AoIn, improving access and inclusion across everyday systems, and AIHS, ensuring access and integrity in higher-risk system contexts. All initiatives align under AFF Missions’ focus on addressing the foundations of fairness.

  • Preventative by design, not crisis-led

  • Explicitly upstream and midstream, addressing conditions and systems

  • Non-stigmatising, avoiding deficit or blame-based narratives

  • Evidence-aligned, informed by FPH, Marmot, WHO and related frameworks

  • Accountable, with defined outcomes and indicators

We focus on shared responsibility and system conditions, not individual fault.

Prevention works best when systems act early, fairly, and with integrity.
